THE NEW MAYOR: WATER, ELECTRICITY AND ROAD MAINTENANCE ARE OUR FIRST PRIORITY
The new mayor of uPhongolo Municipality has vowed to shake things up.
“The time has come for the new council to roll up their sleeves. Time for sleeping is over and we must start working,” said the new Mayor Cllr Mashiya Mackenzie Hadebe during the official inauguration of the new council.
The ANC, who is in the majority, nominated Cllr M M Hadebe as mayor and Cllr Vusumuzi Hebert Ncamphalala for the position of speaker, Cllr Joseph Bhekokwakhe Ngema was nominated as the Deputy Mayor from the NFP after both parties entered into a coalition agreement.
The Council is constituted as follows: ANC got 11 seats, NFP= 8 seats, IFP= 7 seats and DA got 1 seat.
The Executive Committee will consist of 5 seats namely: ANC= 2, NFP= 2 and IFP=1.
“I am humbled to be elected to this position,” said the mayor. “I want to appeal to the councillors to take the office seriously, treasure it, and live it.”
The Mayor further stated that services such as water, road maintenance and electricity are the main emphasis which the new council will focus on. The issue of houses will also be taken into cognizance.
He also stressed that his council will work with all parties in the interests of the community of Pongola. “I want to start off my tenure with willingness to work with all parties to help face the challenges of our communities.”
“We are all aware of the issues we need to address. We need to monitor the turnaround strategy we have set ourselves and work together to restore credibility to our area,” he said.
“We must have a synergy of working together and increasing the level of interaction with the communities. Our primary focus will be on the improvement of the quality of life of our people,” Hadebe said.
The new mayor noted that there is a high rate of cattle being stolen in the area of Pongola, and something should be done about it.
